A large living area -- with a wood-burning fireplace and baby grand piano -- opens up to a deck that looks out to rolling hills and a grassy meadow dotted with cows. A cheerful kitchen is equipped with everything needed to easily entertain 10 or more people in the adjacent dining area. nThe light-filled lower level features glass doors opening up to a fenced back yard. A comfortable family room on this level, with a pull-out sofa bed, provides a separate area for the kids to play games or for TV watching. Restful meadow views are also afforded from the first-floor master bedroom, which has a master bath with separate tub and shower. A third bedroom on the lower level has a king bed and its own bathroom. An additional bedroom and bathroom are on the first floor as well. nThe house is equipped with wi-fi, high-speed internet, unlimited local and long-distance service, 40-inch plasma TV with DVD/VHS and a stereo system. Washer and dryer are on site as is all the equipment you will need for outdoor excursions: beach chairs, umbrellas, a picnic basket and coolers. You can cook out on a gas grill, and firewood is provided for the fireplace as well as for beach fires, which are permitted on nearby Ribera Beach. The garage is not available for cars, but there is off-street parking for two vehicles and plenty more parking on the street. n nIdeal for one or more families or several couples, this is a welcoming place where you can relax and feel at home. When you arrive, you will be greeted with a personal note and a basket with a bottle of sparkling cider and sun-dried tomato pesto torta in the refrigerator and animal crackers for the kids. nFor nature lovers, a 10-minute walk will take you to off-the-beaten-path places never discovered by most tourists, including Ribera Beach and Carmel River Beach, where the Carmel River empties into the ocean. Also within walking distance are the historic Carmel Mission and Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch. Point Lobos is five minutes away by car. nThere is a basket brimming with local information about Carmel, Carmel Valley (wine tasting country) Pebble Beach (home of the AT&T and the recent U.S. Open), Big Sur, golf (over 15 in the area), State Parks, area attractions, shopping, (Safeway, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, and Costco are all within 10 minutes), Monterey Aquarium, Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf. Description:The Sugar Shack has several wonderful attributes but the one we think is most significant is its location. Whether you are here to explore the interesting subtleties and delights Big Sur has to offer or you're in Big Sur to just take in the stunning beauty of the coastline this is a great perch from which to do it. Although private the Sugar Shack is not remote -it is a 5 minute drive to Highway 1. A 15 min walk west and your at one of the most dramatic beaches in California. From the Sugar Shack one can choose to explore the natural beauty of this magical place or else indulge in some of the local food or entertainment scenes that are a part of your Big Sur experience. Nepenthe, Ventana, Post's and, Our favorite, Big Sur Bakery, are only 5 minutes by car. Many popular trail-heads are also only minutes away. The Sugar Shack, itself, is nestled at the end of a 50 yard pathway from where the car is parked. It has a rise of about 50 ft so it is only for those who are active (2 minute walk). The cabin itself is 175 square ft with a sunny deck of equal size enjoying nice canyon views. It is decorated a little bit in the 'Island' style (our daughter lives in Hawaii). There is a comfortable pillow-top queen bed with top quality linens, shower, toilet, sink, dresser, closet, DVD player & Cd player. There is a refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker & electric tea pot. Also provided is a barbecue, sink & a two burner stove in the outside kitchen on the covered lanai. On the property there is a wonderful garden and orchard which you are welcome to enjoy. In conclusion: the Sugar Shack is an ideal location for those who wish to be in the center of Big Sur, namely, the Big Sur Valley and its surrounds. Although the Sugar Shack is peaceful and quiet it does not have the remote solitude some may desire. Most of our guests are active and enjoy using it as a base to explore the Big Sur Coast and Valley and return to a discreet retreat in which to relax. Some of our guests don't feel compelled to leave the Sugar Shack at all!

A long time resident happy to help you with concierge services - where to go, where to eat, etc. We can arrange a massage (in the studio), a beach bonfire, a pet sitter, whatever. We can share some information about the Carmel area that many guide books overlook.
