Description:This house belongs to a a large property which extends over the hills overlooking the Val d 'Orcia, an enchanting and miraculously unspoilt valley in southern Tuscany, listed as UNESCO world heritage in 2004. Midway between Florence and Rome, the estate is also within easy reach of Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto. Renaissance and medieval gems such as Pienza, Montepulciano, Monticchiello and Montalcino and the Abbey of Sant 'Antimo are only a few miles away from the houses you can rent at the property. nThe countryside around the estate abounds in lovely walks in the woods and the typical crete senesi (clay hills) of the region. The food is considered the best in Tuscany and famous wines such as the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino can be sampled in the local cellars. nThe name of this house means beautiful view - rightly so, as the entire Orcia valley and the Amiata mountain are spread out below. The house lies at 600 metres above sea level, not far from the medieval castle Castelletto belonging to the estate, where exhibitions and a music festival take place in summer. Fields and woods surround Belguardo, which includes a large stone granary. Over the long, two-storied farmhouse grow vines and roses, lavender and rosemary. nThis farmhouse is divided into three sections, one of which is occupied by the farmer 's family whilst the other two are for rent. The square in front of the house is paved with large flat stones and in Italian is called the aia. This is where the wheat used to be threshed. Behind the house lies a beautifully maintained garden with stunning views. At the far end of the garden there is a pool with sunbeds and deckchairs which is also used by guests staying at Castelletto, an ancient castle about 1 km away. Due to the altitude, even on the hottest summer day pleasant breezes prevail. The overall atmosphere is one of rustic charm and comfort. nA country restaurant where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner is in walking distance (1.5 km), if you feel like a stroll. nPlaces of interest nThe property 's location makes excursions to Siena, Assisi, Orvieto, Perugia, Arezzo and Florence an easy day trip. But the area below Siena, stretching from the monastery of Monte Oliveto to Montalcino and Montepulciano offers some rewarding sites that are well worth a visit. nIn San Quirico d 'Orcia make sure you see the Horti Leonini, an early Renaissance garden, as well as the western door in the city wall and the Collegiata (main church). nMontalcino is beautifully situated on a hill inhabited since Etruscan times, swathed in vineyards and olive groves. It is a quiet, affluent, attractive town with pretty buildings and flower-filled squares, and many shops selling the Brunello di Montalcino. nMontepulcino is a graceful Tuscan hill town, best known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which was being praised by connoisseurs over 200 years ago and can certainly contend with Italy 's best today. nPienza, the unfinished 'utopian ' city, was commissioned by Pope Pius II in 1459. nChiusi is one of our favourites because of its unpretentious liveliness. Compared to Montepulciano it is uncontaminated by tourism. Chiusi has a railway station - from here it is a quick ride to the city center of Rome. nMonticchiello is a pleasant walled village, whose crooked watch-tower is visible from afar. Next to the church is a small shop which sells local linens (towels, bedspreads) and materials in pure linen. They use traditional methods and patterns and the results are extremely attractive. nVisit the abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore and the semi-derelict monastery of Sant 'Anna in Camprena - a very romantic setting which served as location for the film The English Patient. nSant 'Antimo is surely one of the loveliest Romanesque buildings in all of Italy. It is hard to imagine a more sympathetic combination of architectural grace and natural setting. nSarteano fits our picture of an unspoilt Italian village. The main square has a nice bar where you can sit outside. On the square below, in the afternoon a different bar serves excellent take away pizza. nAnd last but not least the landscape in this region of Tuscany is spectacular: The Crete Senesi are the eroded clay hills in the Orcia valley. These strange, pale, barren looking slopes, with their bare cliffs, broken gullies and white Jurassic limestone, look altogehter more lunar than terrestial. nPool in winter? nTuscany is famous for its Hot springs, belonging to a geothermical system that more or less encircles Monte Amiata, the most spectacular being Saturnia in the south west of the region. Steaming water collects in a number of white limestone basins - a rare natural spectacle and great fun to bathe in! Swimming possible both in the natural basins and in smart thermal baths. Saturnia offers a wide range of comforts and even a sauna. nClose to the property is Bagno Vignoni which has been popular since Etruscan times. St. Catherine of Siena is said to have appreciated its thearpeutic qualities, as is Lorenzo the Magnificent, whose family built the splendid arcaded pool - a kind of flooded, bubbling piazza, famously used by Tarkowsky for some of the more surreal passages of his film Nolstalgia. Not far from this antique piazza there is a hotel with a lovely open air swimming pool, fed from hot springs. This is also available to external guests. nBagni San Filippo may go into the books as the world 's smallest thermal spa - a telephone booth, a few old houses, outdoor spring in the middle of the woods with glistening limestone formations and one small hotel with a public pool. nThe Montepulciano thermal springs can also be enjoyed in an indoor thermal swimming pool. nJust 10 km from the property you will find the thermal spa Terme di Chianciano with a highly modern health and thermal centre. Those wanting to combine holidays with a wellness break can enjoy fango baths, cosmetic and therapeutic treatments, solarium, massages and hydromassages. Have yourself thoroughly pampered! Just relax here!

A long driveway, dramatically lined with centuries-old cypress trees, leads up to the impressive Castello San Savino. It is shown on the map of Valdichiana drawn by Leonardo da Vinci in 1503. The property has belonged to the same family for centuries and lies at the center of a large estate where the family produce Chianti wine and olive oil, which is available for purchase directly from the farm. The Castello has recently been carefully renovated, preserving the original rooms just as they have always been, with antique furniture, large 17th century stone fireplaces, splendid floors made in terracotta, stone and marble. It is, however, equipped with every modern convenience: central heating, Internet connection, satellite TV, and laundry service. The garden, which overlooks the valley, is surrounded by centuries-old trees, and on the stone panoramic terrace you will find a large swimming pool with a Roman staircase lined with mosaics, two bathroom/dressing rooms, and plenty of lounging furniture. Next to the pool area is also a hydro massage pool (3.5x2.5 m). From here you also access the gymnasium and sauna. The entire terrace is brilliantly lit up at night by large, wrought iron lamps. nThe Castello is five kms from Monte San Savino where there nare excellent restaurants and other conveniences, and six kms from the A1 motorway exit. Centrally located, must-see places such as Florence, Arezzo, Cortona, Siena, Montepulciano, and Perugia are less than an hour away. Rome is just an hour and a half away. nThe staff who look after the Castello live in an independent apartment at the rear. nIncluded in the price: Maid service two times a week for six hours (12 hours total), one set of pool towels/week, and 1 change of bath and linens during the week. nAt extra cost and upon request: Lunch and dinner prepartation ($45 - $60 per person), additional maid service. nNOTE: THIS PROPERTY CAN BE RENTED FOR LONG WEEKENDS (MINIMUM 3 NIGHTS) DURING LOW AND MID SEASON. PLEASE INQUIRE ABOUT PRICE. Castello San Savino is arranged on three floors, each offering its own unique arrangement of bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. Large, stone fireplaces are interspersed throughout the Castello, and floors one and two offer small, but complete, kitchens. The annex has a living room with Satellite TV, a corner kitchen, access to the garden, and three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms (two with queen beds and the third with two twin beds). nNeedless to say, Castello San Savino would provide a perfect venue for an intimate wedding, family reunion, or for a special birthday/anniversary celebration. Its location is ideal for exploring all that Tuscany has to offer! Monte San Savino rises in the valley of Chiana, on a hill dominating the valley of the Esse torrent. The local economy is mainly based on the production of cereals, fruit, vegetables, grapes, olives and sugar beets. There are also many factories manufacturing pottery, furniture, and frames. The place name comes from a compound of Monte (mount) and the Latin name of person Sabinius. The first settlements in the territory of Monte San Savino probably go back to the Age of the Etruscans, and later ,the Romans. nAmong the most important monuments to see in Monte San Savino are the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista (Saint John Baptist Church), the Chiesa di Sant 'Agostino (Saint Augustine Church), the Chiesa di Santa Chiara (Saint Chiara Church), the Loggia del Mercato (Gallery of the Market) and the Museo delle Ceramiche (Museum of the Potteries). Numerous celebrations periodically take place in Monte San Savino, including the Sagra della Porchetta Savinese held on the first half of September. The festival celebrates the Porchetta of Monte San Savino, that is, the typical sausage based on pork meat made according to some ancient and traditional recipes. The Porchetta is flavored with fennel, garlic and black pepper and is quite delicious.

Description:Il Vecchio Fienile Country House is situated high on one of the lovely hills surrounding the village of Ponte Felcino. Its position, 285 mt above sea level, dominates this lovely Umbrian valley and on a clear Summer evening the lights of the enchanting town of Assisi can be seen flickering in the distance.Set among olive groves, woods, cultivated fields of sunflowers, wheat or corn, and a plantation of cherry and walnut trees, Il Vecchio Fienile is the perfect place to spend a holiday in total tranquillity surrounded by the beautiful countryside so typical of Umbria. Take long walks along the country paths, go bird watching in the quiet woods or just relax by the pool while admiring the breathtaking view from this magical position. This lovely stone farmhouse dates back to 1874. Originally, the farm workers lived on this large estate with their familes and worked in the fields, harvested the corn, wheat and sunflowers, cared for the vineyards and produced olive oil from the 400 olive trees. The farmhouse was built entirely by hand using large rocks and stones and the very thick exterior walls render the farmhouse cool in Summer and warm in Winter. At that time part of the ground floor was used as the stable to shelter the farm animals and the original wall troughs, where they drank, are still visible today. Passing through an arch you could enter into the area where the farm workers, after harvesting the grapes, crushed them with their feet in massive stone basins. This room is now tastefully furnished and used to welcome our guests. The beautifully restored barn, which is only a few metres from the house, was originally used to store the hay after harvesting time and the massive oak beams that supported the roof can still be seen today.
