Because of our age, the things that we loved may not be what a younger group would search for and find. The many things we loved about our 4 weeks there in Oct-Nov. were: How helpful you and Paulo were. The weather. The way we could walk to everything or take the bus or train so easily to Lisbon or the coastal towns.Getting a bottle of water with the local people at the fountain at the bottom of the hill. The fabulous flea market on a Sunday that we could walk to.The wonderful food everywhere and coffee every day at our favorite pastry shop. The ease of getting money so close to the pastry shop. The coziness of the house and its supply of books to read. The fun and friendliness of little groceries and the helpful people when I didn't know something. The wonderful Dentist downtown when I broke a tooth. I haven't had a bit of trouble with it since then. The wonderful way everything grows so lush. The incredible rain storms which we loved. How the town gets decorated for Christmas starting the last weeks in November. Gorgeous! The Toy museum, the art museum, the castles and the bus ride to the Moors castle just for the fun of it on the way home from town since we had weekly bus passes. Best regards, Mary Lou Mayes We stayed at the Casa da Confraria in September 2004 for my wife's 40th birthday. We couldn't have been happier with the house and Sintra itself. The house was furnished with beautiful antiques and decorated with exquisite Portuguese tiles. There were two bedrooms, one on the first floor and one on the second with an adjoining room that I believe had another single bed. There were three sitting rooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and two terraces - the higher one complete with fruit trees and a table for alfresco dining. The house is at the top of a hill, and at night, you can walk out the front door and see all the way to the sea. At the bottom of the hill, there is a natural spring where the locals fill their water bottles, and we did as well. There were plenty of restaurants, both down the hill to the main part of town and over in Sao Pedro, which is walkable from the house. Sao Pedro also has a market every second and fourth Sunday with a wide variety of foods and products for sale, including an amazing bread stuffed with chouri o made in clay ovens permanently installed in the square there. Getting it hot out of the oven made it even more delicious. There is also a local bus that stops at the bottom of the hill and goes into another part of Sintra where there is a grocery store. Sintra itself is wonderfully beautiful, with two royal palaces and amazing courtiers' houses. We were very comfortable in the house. The surroundings were elegant and the site manager extremely helpful. The owner even gave us the number of a taxi driver who picked us up at the airport in Lisbon and took us to the house. We look forward to returning to Casa da Confraria, having had such a lovely time there.Matt Flynn and Megan MoohaI have had the pleasure of staying at Casa Da Confraria (in both Casa Grande and Casa Piquena) on several occasions over the last 5 years. When my business requires visits to Portugal, it is the only place that I will stay within the entire country and I always ensure I take enough time to have a small holiday with family and friends because it is so idyllic and magical.Casa Da Confraria could not be better located. The house is on a convenient, yet quiet street that is peaceful and adds to the historical splendor of the area. Not only is it an easy and beautiful walk to Sintra, and many of the regional palaces, it is a simple drive to see other national treasures of Portugal and is conveniently located for drives to Lisbon, the Algarve or up north towards Porto. Market shopping is also very convenient for food or for gifts that are unique to the country. Both houses are beautifully appointed and easy to use with a full complement of modern appliances. The proprietor has a house manager who is very familiar with the area and quite responsive to your every need. He also suggests a driver who is also responsive and interested in ensuring you see the best of what the area has to offer. The combination of the setting and supporting manager and driver ensure that anybody staying will have a fabulous time. Many thanks Ben for offering this wonderful gem on the Atlantic. It's a true treasure.Barb FerneyhoughDear Ben,Just to let you know that we think often of our stay in your fascinating home, the Casa Da Confraria in Sintra. The house was ideally situated in the town, walking distance to so many wonderful sites and attractions. And, having a lovely garden to relax in after a busy day of hiking or sightseeing was definitely an added bonus. We do hope to come back one day --this time with our family, for another extended stay. All the best, MarilynSometime ago we had the pleasure of staying at Casa da Confraria. The view over Sintrais lovely...and the walk to the village centre is a pleasant walk down the hill. It is easy tofind when one knows where it is..but a puzzle for taxi drivers from Lisbon. However, your recommended driver was great and met flights in Lisbon ...There is parking close by...buta car is not absolutely necessary...the train is more convenient for trips to Lisbon.. The house is delightfully renovated and decorated in the period of its origin...Although therooms are typically small...they are very comfortable and there are enough rooms on threefloors to accomodate a family with ease...It is well-equipped with all necessary china, cutlery, utensils etc... The garden is especially inviting...on two levels with appropriateseating etc...We had some pleasant picnic lunches there... We were fortunate to have both houses (attached and sharing the same garden)..sowe had rooms that we didn't even use when all the family arrived...but we needed all the bedrooms. We very much enjoyed our stay in Sintra and Casa da Confraria...and highly recommend it for anyone wishing a delightful stay in Portugal.Anne Ratuski Canada We have a wonderful time at your house in Sintra. I would strongly consider Casa Da Confraria in my plans if we ever get back to Portugal.Best Regards, John and Gayle DucaYes, we had a very nice stay in your villa in Sintra some years ago. We were 12 persons who lived in the two houses with good space. The house was very well equipped and we appreciated especially the garden with the cave in the rock. Sintra is a wonderful town and the house is very well situated. Your manager did everything to do our living comfortable. It is to be recommended.Lars Gunnar HjerneOur families rented both villas in Sintra know as the Casas de Confraria in the month of June for four weeks. We very much enjoyed our stay and found the villa to be well appointed and conveniently located for travel to Sintra, trains to Lisbon, along with the beaches. The villas were exceptionally well decorated and very comfortable. We would recommend this villa to our family and friends.Charles CariWe had a lovely stay at Casa Da Confraria. No need to get in the car and drive a long distance....Sintra is charming and full of history. Susan RoadyNorfolk, VAEmails of the guests will be provided upon request.
