During the 13th and 14th centuries it flourished as one of the major cities of Europe, growing rich from banking and the wool trade. The 14th century saw a great amount of construction: the Duomo, the Palazzo Publico and the Campo Square were all products of this time. Siena's glory took a tragic downturn by the end of the 14th century due to the Black Death and political upheaval. The city became little more than a rural market center. It was exactly this decline that accounts for the incredible state of medieval preservation that Siena exhibits today. Built across several hills and valleys, you will find a bit of up and down while walking through the historical center. However, the lack of traffic makes it a wonderful place to strolle28094even when packed with tourists, there is a quiet and easygoing feel. A must-see is the shell-shaped square called Il Campo. This is the focal point of the city as well as being the venue for the internationally renowned horse race, the Palio. nCasole d'Elsa hosts one of the most charming museums of the many recently opened/restyled in Siena. The art exhibited ranges from the Neolithic era to the XVII century. A visit to the attached Collegiata di Casole is also highly recommended. nColle Val d'Elsa's newer outskirts offer very few attractions, aside from the crystal manufacturinge28094but the old town/historical center, Colle Alta, deserves to be seen. Particularly interesting in Colle Alta is the Palazzo Campana, built in the XVI century by the architect Agnolo di Baccio d'Agnolo. This private building looks like a city gate, or a triumphal arch, and dominates the main street of Colle. The Cathedral shows a rich collection of paintings from the XVII century. Don't miss the dramatic and intense Nativity by Rutilio Manetti (fourth chapel on the right, looking to the main altar).

Description:Il Cellese is set in the heart of the Chianti, one of the most emblematic and stately areas of the Italian countryside. Located between Florence and Siena, its undulating hills evoke the refined country life of antiquity while maintaining its beauty and balance. Along its extensive terrain, oak forests alternate with cypress, vineyards and centennial olive trees. Here, the best Tuscan wines and olive oils are produced. The Chianti is a lifestyle marked by the rhythm of the land and having a fascination With its tradition. Its prosperity still endures at present, as do the images that the great Renaissance masters permeated their canvases with, a piece of the Italian 'belle country' that embraces centuries of history and has miraculously remained intact since the Middle Ages. The country estate of il Cellese occupies one of the most privileged locations of the Chianti. But, ite28099s the fusion of its landscape, agriculture, its wines, its healthy climate, its history and its proximity to the most beautiful cities that make Il Cellese unique. From its spacious apartments, perched upon a hilltop, you can contemplate an invaluable historic heritage and simultaneously enjoy the hospitality of the estate. ts geographic situation offers the possibility of traveling, in little time, to cities such as: Siena, Florence, Pisa, Arezzo or Lucca, most of them less than an hour away. nSERVICES: n Swimming pool - The pool is 16x8 metres, at its shallowest it is 120cm deep and at its deepest it is 2.50 metres. The prevailing character of Cortonae28099s architecture is medieval with steep narrow streets situated on a hillside (600 meters), embracing a view of the whole of the Valdichiana. The town's chief artistic treasures are two panels by Fra Angelico in the Diocesan Museum, an Annunciation and a Madonna and Child with Saints. A third surviving work by the same artist is the fresco above the entrance to the church of San Domenico. From Cortona you can travel to Lake Trasimeno, surrounded by charming villages, particularly Passignano, that appears to be locked between undulating green hills and the azure lake. Of note, Cortona was the setting for e28098Under the Tuscan Sune28099 by Frances Mayes. n nSouth of Siena nIn an area of ancient medieval battlegrounds and a landscape that changes with the seasons is where you will find the land of e28098Arbiae28099: Montalcino, the region of e2809cBrunelloe2809d, Pienza (home of Pope Paul II) and the Etruscan village of Montepulciano. Ite28099s about an houre28099s drive along the ancient road e28098Via Cassiae28099 toward Rome. n nSan Gimignano & Volterra nA road trip through Tuscany would not be complete without a visit to these towns. The rolling hills along the way are simply breataking and the trip will take you back in time. Volterra is renowned for alabaster. It is a city of stone with its narrow streets, looming towers and majestic palaces and fortifications made of yellow-grey fossil infused sandstone. San Gimignano has managed to conserve fourteen towers (of the original 72) which date back to the 11th & 13th centuries and has retained its feudal atmosphere and appearance. The town also has several masterpieces of 14th- and 15th-century Italian art. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and the location for some of the filming of Franco Zeffirellie28099s e28098Tea with Mussolinie28099. The drive is an hour or so. n nCHIANTI REGION: between forests & vineyards nWhile the Chianti region is famous for its wine, the area is also truly one of Italye28099s most spectacular. The undulating hills, dotted with cypress trees, stunning vineyards and ancient villages are stunning to behold. Just some of the smaller villages worth a visit are: Radda in Chianti, Volpaia & Lamole. At the end of a daye28099s drive in the region you may see villagers returning home along ancient dirt roads that were once part of historic battlegrounds, while the smell of flowers and lavender perfume the air and the sun sets on a magical day in a breathtaking land.
