You 're not going to come across the place by chance, it lies well off the beaten track. In and around the property one can find hills, forests, lakes, wild animals, vegetable gardens, orchards and a private astronomical observatory. During the 13th and 14th centuries it flourished as one of the major cities of Europe, growing rich from banking and the wool trade. The 14th century saw a great amount of construction: the Duomo, the Palazzo Publico and the Campo Square were all products of this time. Siena's glory took a tragic downturn by the end of the 14th century due to the Black Death and political upheaval. The city became little more than a rural market center. It was exactly this decline that accounts for the incredible state of medieval preservation that Siena exhibits today. Built across several hills and valleys, you will find a bit of up and down while walking through the historical center. The swimming pool lies on the lower level of the 3,000 sq.m. garden and gives a wide view of the valley below. However you choose to spend your days, this accommodation in Tuscany will not disappoint you. n nThis Estate is a 13th century borgo with an old farmhouse, wine cellars, olive and oil mills, carpenter shop, small church, and stables. The villa has belonged to the same family since the 17th century. The beautiful property is over 250 hectares [about 625 acres], and includes vineyards that produce a wonderful Chianti Classico, olive trees [which produce a tasty extra virgin oil], hay fields and woods. The view from the estate includes rolling hills, the old walled town of Monteriggioni, and in the distance, the towers of San Gimignano. There is ample area for parking on the property. The 500 meter unpaved driveway leading to the villa is lined with cypress, and opens to a well preserved Italian garden. The antique swimming pool [11 m x 6 m x 2 m] is surrounded by classical statues. This pool is open from 1 May to mid-October. A second, larger swimming pool [15m x 7m] is located by the out-buildings and has a lovely view over an infinity-edge. There is a BBQ area available, there is a bocce court in the back garden, and billiard and table tennis are both available. No children under the age of 14 are allowed on the property, due to the valuable antiques inside the villa and around the pool. nThe villa features original furniture from the 17th century and frescos in the Empire bedroom, the dining room, the ballroom, and the Egyptian library. The friendly and hospitable owners live on the third floor of the Villa [separate entrance], and the guardians live on the property along with other farmers on the estate. The owners' dogs have their own enclosed garden, however, they can be heard during their daily walks on the property! The private area outside the Villa consists of the Italian garden, equipped with large sunshades, wood deck chairs, and marble table with wrought iron chairs for 8 people. nLa Casa is a spacious and independent rustic country house, independent from the villa, near the second swimming pool with a garden area overlooking the vineyards. There is a large fig tree providing shade and a barbecue area and table tennis. There is an outside table for eating that can seat twelve, and there is other garden furniture. On the grounds there are also a bocce court and an archery range. The house is furnished with simple, antique furniture, terra cotta floors, wood beamed ceilings, and whitewashed walls. There are wonderful views from all of the windows. nLa Volta is a bright and spacious farmhouse that is ideal for families and groups. There is a private garden area with barbecue and marble table. nThe entire estate can sleep a total of 32 people. nEvery Saturday the bedrooms and bathrooms are cleaned and the linens and towels are changed. Additional cleaning is available at 10 Euros per hour. Dinner services are available [with advance notice] for 45 Euros per person for a minimum of 6 people [wine is not included]. Siena 's glory took a tragic downturn by the end of the 14th century due to the Black Death and political upheaval. The city became little more than a rural market center. It was exactly this decline that accounts for the incredible state of medieval preservation that Siena exhibits today. Built across several hills and valleys, you will find a bit of up and down while walking through the historical center. However, the lack of traffic makes it a wonderful place to stroll-even when packed with tourists, there is a quiet and easygoing feel. A must-see is the shell-shaped square called Il Campo. This is the focal point of the city as well as being the venue for the internationally renowned horse race, the Palio. Casole d 'Elsa hosts one of the most charming museums of the many recently opened/restyled in Siena. The art exhibited ranges from the Neolithic era to the XVII century. A visit to the attached Collegiata di Casole is also highly recommended. Colle Val d 'Elsa 's newer outskirts offer very few attractions, aside from the crystal manufacturing-but the old town/historical center, Colle Alta, deserves to be seen. Particularly interesting in Colle Alta is the Palazzo Campana, built in the XVI century by the architect Agnolo di Baccio d 'Agnolo. This private building looks like a city gate, or a triumphal arch, and dominates the main street of Colle. The Cathedral shows a rich collection of paintings from the XVII century.
