French doors open to a small terrace that is furnished with a table, chairs, and barbecue. n nThe farmhouse is located three kilometers from Monticchiello, where you'll find shops, restaurants, and a market. Monticchiello still has its original city walls, towers, and castle, while the main site is the 13th century gothic church, which contains a beautiful altarpiece. Each summer, the locals put on plays that they themselves have wrote with three acts. The first act takes place in the past, the second act takes place in the present, and the third act takes place in the future. If you're looking for a town a little bigger, Pienza is about a 15-minute drive away. In addition to shops and restaurants, there are markets, banks, a pharmacy, post office, and gas station, visit Pienza. The history of Pienza (or Citta di Pio) is closely linked to Pope Pius II, known as the great humanist. In 1458 he transformed this ancient town (his birthplace) into a perfect example of architectural and urban design. Judging by the attention this gorgeous town still gets today, his ambitious project was a success, attracting visitors from all over the world. The main sites include the Palazzo Piccolomini and the Duomo. Description:High on the side of a hill, looking out over the folds of the Chianti landscape, Casa Silvia is an enchantingly simple house, with terraces and gardens ranged around it allowing you to follow the sun or avoid it. This is a house designed for reading, sipping wine and setting the world to rights, relaxed in an armchair watching the sun change the colours of the hills as it sinks in the distance. A path leads to the nearby Loro Ciuffena - a 20 minute walk that avoids the roads and gets you in the mood for one of the good local restaurants - remember to take a torch for your walk back amongst the fireflies. nThe front of the house has a large shaded pergola. One enters to find a living room to the left with a wood-burning stove, and a well-equipped kitchen which opens directly out onto a private garden with stunning views. Up the stairs there is a comfortable double bedroom, a twin bedroom, a small single bedroom and a very cosy (but not small!) study with a fireplace and access to a covered terrace. The furniture is simple and stylish, and the house retains its country charm. nThe house is set against the hillside of Pratomagno - a chain of hills rising to 1591 metres - around 4500 feet - all within protected National Park status. There are beautiful walks, ancient monasteries set in chestnut woods, and cycling trails. Florence is very close by, and can be reached by train, avoiding parking and driving problems. Siena and Arezzo are within an hour. The house is ideally positioned to explore Tuscany and makes a perfect peaceful retreat to return to when even the delights of Giotto or Piero della Francesca start to pall.
