In the direction of the river, you can find Praça do Comércio, centre of the old Portuguese empire near the river Tejo (Tagus river).Chiado is considered the most beautiful area of historic Lisbon. It was a place of residence of the Portuguese royalty and of the political and cultural elites. Nearby are located the theatre S. Luis and the opera S. Carlos.
